Choosing Automatic Gates When Side Space Is Limited

Not every entrance has a long, clear boundary where a conventional sliding gate can retract. CAIMEN engineers telescopic, sectional and folding gate arrangements around restricted side space, corners and existing site structures.

Not every entrance has a long, clear boundary where a conventional sliding gate can retract. CAIMEN engineers telescopic, sectional and folding gate arrangements around restricted side space, corners and existing site structures.

Start with the Space the Gate Can Actually Use

An entrance has two important dimensions: the width vehicles need to pass through and the space available for the gate while it opens. Nearby walls, columns, landscaping and buildings influence the movement route. We use the site layout to select an appropriate gate arrangement before finalizing the structure and drive.

Side runback

Measure the unobstructed distance available along the fence or boundary beside the opening.

Turning and folding space

Check whether the gate can follow an inside corner or fold within an available operating area.

Ground and support conditions

Gate tracks, foundation positions, columns and supporting surfaces are considered for the selected movement arrangement.

Three Ways to Work with Limited Space

Telescopic Sliding Gates

Coordinated sliding leaves overlap as the gate opens, reducing the side runback needed compared with a conventional single sliding leaf. This layout is useful when the clear opening is wide but the available boundary length is restricted.

Sectional Sliding Gates

Connected sections travel around a curved track and continue along an adjoining boundary. This arrangement uses space around a corner instead of relying entirely on one straight runback. The track route and corner geometry are essential to the layout.

Bi-Folding Gates

Hinged leaves fold as the entrance opens. We review the folding footprint, hinge support and vehicle clearance to determine whether this movement fits the available area.

The Gate Layout Comes Before the Gate Size

We develop the arrangement from the clear opening, side dimensions, adjacent structures and required movement. These details guide the number and size of leaves, track or support positions, drive equipment and safety devices. Custom gate leaf designs and finishes are coordinated after the operating geometry is established.

Send Us Your Entrance Layout

A measured site sketch is the best starting point. Include the clear opening, side distances, walls or columns near the entrance, the intended gate height and photographs taken from both sides of the driveway. We will review which gate arrangement fits the available space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gate uses less side space than a conventional sliding gate?

A telescopic sliding gate uses coordinated leaves to shorten the required retraction area. A sectional gate can follow a corner, while a bi-folding gate uses a folding movement. Each requires a different site layout, so the available dimensions determine the selection.

Can a sliding gate follow a corner?

A sectional sliding gate uses connected panels and a curved track to move around a corner. The corner radius, travel route and supporting construction are reviewed against the proposed installation.

What measurements do I need to send?

Provide the clear opening, height, available side runback and distance to nearby walls or columns. A sketch or site photographs help us review the full gate travel area.
